Koyarwa Initiative (KI)
The Koyarwa Initiative is a youth-led education intervention program by AFN Foundation that aims to close the education gap in underserved communities across Northern Nigeria. By recruiting, training, and deploying passionate youth volunteers—especially university students, fresh graduates, and NYSC members—the initiative targets children and adolescents who lack access to quality formal education.
About the project
Objectives:
Bridge the education inequality in underserved areas, especially in literacy, numeracy, and life skills.
Engage and empower young Nigerians to serve as change agents within their communities.
Support overstretched or under-resourced schools with teaching support and mentorship.
Cultivate a culture of civic responsibility, leadership, and service among Nigeria’s youth.
Approach:
The Koyarwa Initiative identifies enthusiastic young volunteers and equips them with training in basic teaching methods, child psychology, community engagement, and conflict sensitivity. Once trained, they are deployed to public schools, community learning centers, or informal settings where they deliver structured lessons, mentorship, and life skills training to students. Volunteers receive stipends, certificates, and long-term support, ensuring personal and professional growth.
Expected Impact:
Improved learning outcomes in literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development for children in rural and low-income areas.
Strengthened capacity of local schools and community centers through additional human resources.
A growing network of youth leaders committed to national development and education reform.
Scalable volunteer-led education model that can be adapted across Nigeria.
